Until 1997, the line started in Keishin-Sanjō station (close to present Sanjō-Keihan station) and ran overground to Misasagi station.
In 1997, this section was replaced by the Tōzai subway line with through running of trains between Tōzai line and Keishin line.
In Ōtsu, the trains run in the street, so travelling on this line combines underground, railway and tram travel style in one trip!
