The lines belonged until Feb 1, 2003 to Keifuku - which also have lines in the Kyōtō area. The Keifuku lines in Fukui was then transferred to Echizen Tetsudō.
The main owners of Echizen Tetsudō are:
Sakai City (17.4%), Katusyama City (16.7%), Fukui City (16.1%).

The traffic was suspended in June 2001 due to an accident. The line was reopened in July and October 2003 with a new owner and a new name. It was previously called Echizen hon (main) line.
The section Fukui - Fukuiguchi is also served by Mikuni Awara line trains (see below).
