Shinetsu line run originally from Takasaki to Niigata. When the Nagano Shinkansen was opened in 1997, the line was split into three sections and one section was closed.
When the Shinkansen line was extended to Kanazawa as Hokuriku Shinkansen in 2015, another split occured.

• Takasaki - Yokokawa
• Yokokawa - Karuizawa (Closed)
• Karuizawa - Shinonoi (transferred in 1997 to Shinano Railway)
• Shinonoi - Nagano (used by JR Shinonoi line and Shinano Railway)
• Nagano - Myōkōkōgen (transferred in 2015 to Shinano Railway)
• Myōkōkōgen - Naoetsu (transferred in 2015 to Echigo Tokimeki Railway)
• Naoetsu - Niigata
